  • History. The poodle has its origins in Western Europe some 400 years ago. The name comes from the German ‘pudel’, meaning to splash about in water. They are now the French national dog and it is in France where the breed became standardized.
  • Originally working dogs. Poodles were first bred as gun dogs and water fowl retrievers. They still have webbed feet and water resistant fur. The cuts seen on many show poodles today once had a practical purpose that allowed these dogs to swim more efficiently whilst protecting their joints and internal organs.
  • Circus performers. Poodles are very trainable and love to perform, making them perfect candidates for the circus. Their graceful bearing and stylish coat adds to their suitability as entertainers.
  • Smarts. The poodle is regarded as one of the most intelligent, if not the most intelligent, of dogs. They are adept at reading body language and interpreting tone of voice, plus they are attentive and alert. Poodles love to learn new things and have been successfully used as therapy and search and rescue dogs as well as agility contestants.
  • Three sizes. The mini poodle is the medium sized version of the original standard poodle, with the smallest poodle being the toy.
  • Square silhouette. Poodles are roughly the same size in length and height, giving them a square look. Their fur can be cut to the same length all over or clipped in specialized styles. Colors include apricot, cream, brown, black, blue, silver, gray, red, white and cafe-au-lait.
  • Non-shed coats. The poodle’s coat does not moult nearly as much as the coats of other dogs, making the poodle a good choice for allergy sufferers and the house proud.
